In line with our policy and advocacy efforts, we participated in the launch of the PROSPECTS Africa Forum on Decent Work and Forced Displacement bringing together tripartite delegations and regional institutions to strengthen policy action for employment creation in displacement-affected contexts. The forum convened from 21st to 23rd July 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya with representatives of regional institutions, including the East African Community (EAC), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda.
Our Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Douglas Opio shared a statement during the plenary revealing that Employers recognise displacement is no longer a temporary humanitarian emergency but an economic and development reality hence the need for host communities and refugees to access sustainable livelihoods, dignified work, skills development, and vibrant local markets. He appreciated the focus of the second phase of the PROSPECTS partnership (2024–2027) that rightly prioritises system-level change, policy coherence, and robust social dialogue. Mr. Opio further pledged that the business community is committed to transforming challenges into growth by integrating refugees into national value chains, expanding entrepreneurship, and addressing labour market demands.
Mr. Opio shared Employers’ recommendations for Phase II of the project including;
Partnership with governments to reduce legal and practical barriers so refugees can formally register businesses, access financial services, and enter the labour markets.
Expanding apprenticeships, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and work-based learning models to prepare young people for the changing industry needs.
Deepening social dialogue by working closely with governments and trade unions to build resilient, equitable, and forward-looking labor institutions.
Supporting the growth and development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise through common user facilities, and other initiatives
We believe this platform is key to develop policy priorities, strengthen regional networks and identify opportunities for cooperation on employment governance, skills recognition, labour mobility and social protection.
